VALDOSTA — The gymnasium and athletic facilities at J.L. Newbern Middle School were formally opened Thursday.
The new facilities were celebrated in a ribbon cutting, an event attended by most of the Valdosta Board of Education.
“We are very appreciative to the people of Valdosta who voted for SPLOST for us to have these new facilities,” said Newbern Principal Ricky Thomas.
The $6 million facility is highlighted by a 25,000-square-foot gymnasium which includes maximum seating for 914 people for basketball games.
The gymnasium also includes a 2,500-square-foot weight room, a men’s and women’s locker room for home and visiting teams, a laundry room, three coaches’ offices, a concession stand, and a men’s and women’s restroom for both home and visiting sides.
“This is one of these opportunities that we come out and we just want to show you how we’re trying to be the best stewards possible with the responsibility we’re given for our students,” said Vanassa Flucas, Valdosta Board of Education chairperson.
The facility also features fields for softball, baseball, track and field and football.
“I want to thank you for our unwavering support of our school system,” said Dr. Todd Cason, Valdosta superintendent of schools. “Without you, this would not be possible. I see this more than a celebration and a dedication of facilities. I see this as a celebration of a strong partnership — a partnership between our school system and our community. We must work together to ensure our young people have the best possible facilities, and this is a state-of-the-art facility. Our fields are first-class, so again, that partnership is vital for our young people to have the best they deserve.”
